5 Networking Trends and Tips from The Inner Circle Membership Director

Hello Inner Circle members and guests! I’m Julie Burt, the Inner Circle Membership Director. I help prospective members learn more about Inner Circle and help current members navigate their member benefits. After spending a lot of time connecting with members, prospects, and guests at Inner Circle events, I've started to notice some real patterns in what makes networking actually work. Here are five things I'm seeing now that can help you get more from your networking efforts.

1. Industry Squads Are Where the Real Magic Happens

The most successful Inner Circle members are building deeper connections and collaborating on deals with other members within our Industry Squads. These are small groups that meet monthly on Zoom to connect with other members in their same industry.

When you connect with others in your field, you're building a brain trust. I've watched marketing professionals tackle website challenges together, HR leaders swap strategies for retention issues, and financial advisors collaborate on complex client situations. These monthly meetups become your personal advisory board and your go-to folks to hire when you need an expert.

2. It’s All in the Follow-Up

You can show up to every virtual event on the calendar, but if you're not scheduling one-on-ones afterward, you're leaving money on the table. The members who see the biggest results are diligent about follow-up. They're not pushy about it, but they're consistent. A quick message after an event, a virtual coffee within the week, and boom! You've moved from "nice to meet you" to an actual connection.

Not every connection needs a follow-up coffee, though. Part of networking well is being honest with yourself about who actually makes sense for you right now. Think about who you want to refer business to, who might refer business to you, and who you could realistically collaborate with down the road. When you follow up with intention, those conversations are better for everyone involved.

3. People Want Genuine Connection More Than Ever

Maybe it's the state of the world, or maybe we've all just had enough of surface-level networking, but guests tell me constantly how refreshing it feels to be in a space where they don't have to put on a show. They can be themselves. They can admit when business is tough. They can ask for help without feeling like they're showing weakness. The members who embrace this level of authenticity are the ones building the strongest networks.

4. Virtual Events Have Staying Power

A few years ago, everyone thought we'd rush back to in-person everything. But virtual networking isn't going anywhere. Our members love the convenience of jumping into a Virtual Leadership Lunch from their home office or attending a Virtual Happy Hour without the commute. The trick is treating virtual events with the same respect you'd give an in-person meeting. Arrive on time, engage in the breakout rooms, and stay through the end. Keep your focus on the meeting and avoid checking emails or other distractions. Show up authentically and put in the same energy you would at an in-person meetup.

5. Collaboration Beats Competition Every Single Time

This is the trend I'm most excited about because it goes against everything traditional networking taught us. Members who choose to work with their direct competitors are seeing opportunities they never imagined. Two consultants in the same space team up to handle a project too big for one of them. Three coaches create a joint offering that serves clients better than any of them could solo. When you stop guarding your territory and start looking for ways to work together, the possibilities multiply fast.

There's one thing tying all these trends together. Networking works when you commit to building real relationships over time. Quick wins are nice, but the sustainable growth comes from showing up consistently, being genuinely helpful, and trusting that good things follow.

Want to see these tips in action? Join us at an upcoming event and experience what networking feels like when collaboration takes the lead. I hope to see you soon!
